Skyrim Dragonborn Helmet Replica / Prop by WispyChipmunk Skyrim Dragonborn Helmet Replica / Prop by WispyChipmunk
Woo, got another project done! This is the iron helmet from Skyrim. I really love some of the helmet designs in that game and may just make another one now that this one's done, lol. :P

It started off as a papercraft model, then we added resin and auto body filler to fill and smooth it out. I added some craft foam for the metal strips above the eye holes and some little rubber circles for the rivets. Took about 25 hours altogether. :)

It's for sale here on my Etsy shop if anyone's interested:

I've been thinking about making a dovahkiin cosplay for a while and I've seen dozens of helmets but this is definitely the best one. It's absolutely amazing! Clap  I'll try to make one according to this "recipe" of yours. I don't have any experience with foams though so I want to ask - how did you manage to smoothen the surface? Is it just because of the foam itself or did you use some sponge or anything?

Thank you so much, that means a lot!

I actually don't have any experience with foam, either, so I can't really help you there! :XD: This was made from a papercraft model coated with resin and auto body filler. The filler was sanded with an electric sander to get it super smooth. Good luck with your own helmet and cosplay!

Hey dude, building one myself. How'd you nail down the iron colour? I've seen all kinds of different takes on this helmet, some pretty bad. Yours is one of the best, and it's definitely helping me get the back right (so far I just have the front and sides done, and no horns yet). I'm lining the inside with pennies, overlapping them like scales, then giving them a thick coat of glue. It's gonna be able to take a beating. Think I'll do a guard's helmet next. You should do the Dwemer helmet.

Thank you so much! That really means a lot! :aww:

I found a super easy way to get a good iron color which was first painting the entire thing black, then drybrushing over it with silver. Very simple and it left me with pretty good results. The penny thing sounds like a really cool idea, I'm sure that'll look awesome! Sounds like it'll make it a lot heavier, though, haha. I wanted to make the Helm of Yngol as my next project, but I kind of got out of it before I got to start on it. If I ever get back into the hobby, that'll probably be what I start with!

Definitely one of the best iron helms I've seen. I really wish I was good enough with bondo for my projects to come out looking this smooth. Excellent work.

Thank you very much! We were having a lot of trouble with smoothing our Bondo completely until we bought some spot putty to put on top of it. It really did wonders for smoothing out what couldn't really been done with Bondo. It's only our third project, so we still have a lot to learn. :P

What kind of putty did you use? For your next project would you consider not using any bondo and just using that putty?

The Bondo brand has it, it's called glazing and spot putty. It comes in a small tube and doesn't require hardener like the filler. But no, I wouldn't recommend doing that that...you'd need quite a few tubes and I would think it would be harder to work with in large areas since it's a lot thinner than Bondo. It's perfect for getting into those little imperfections in the Bondo like air bubbles and holes...it's what it's meant for after all, lol.

Thanks very much! If I go the bondo route I'll definitely keep that in mind. Great work with that helmet!

:XD:

Papercraft model, add some resin, add some auto body filler, sand, and repeat until it's smooth! That's pretty much it, lol.
